Artist and filmmaker Molly Schiot inadvertently launched her career while convalescing after a back injury during her senior year at Brown. To pass the long hours of physical rehab, the semiotics major and fellow patient Mariah Garnett conceived of an animated film with a marshmallow candy cast. “The best part was that we shot it in winter, and the Peeps were everywhere in sight. Some were on heaters, where the sugar would burn, and our workspace turned into an aromatic delight,” Schiot recalls. After this sticky maiden voyage the New Hampshire-raised Schiot attended the Glasgow School of Art, going on to make music videos for Mark Ronson, the Raveonettes and Sleater Kinney; commercials for clients including Nokia, Converse and Levi's; and a series of video shorts for Paper. The multitalented Schiot—she also paints, takes photographs and illustrates—cites Miroslav Sasek, Sister Corita and Kenneth Anger among her influences. She lives in Los Angeles.
