Julie Gilhart

It seems socially-conscious living had to become fashionable for people to take notice, but before “green” achieved the critical mass it has today, there was Julie Gilhart. As senior vice-president and fashion director at Barneys New York, Gilhart became an early and fierce advocate for sustainable practices in the fashion world by encouraging designers to develop green products, and her own company to lead the way. In 2007, she spearheaded “Have a Green Holiday,” Barneys’ winter eco campaign, as well as the creation of a line of organic clothing that was carried in all the stores. The Dallas, Texas, native joined the luxury retailer in 1992, and has taken her mission one step further by speaking about environmental responsibility in fashion at conferences around the world and serving on the selection committee for the Earth Awards. Gilhart is also known for being a champion to young designers, bringing lines by Phillip Lim, Gareth Pugh and Joseph Altuzarra to Barneys stores around the globe. She also surfs!
