Jane and Judy Aldridge
The Internet’s populism has made it possible for, say, a 15-year-old girl from Dallas, Texas, with an enthusiasm for vintage Victor Costa and Martin Margiela booties to win notice not only from the public, but from some very prestigious figures in fashion. Such is the case of Jane Aldridge, now 18, whose blog Sea of Shoes attracts more than 70,000 hits a day, has gotten shout-outs from Kanye West and spreads in Teen Vogue, and afforded her invitations to exclusive events such as the Crillon Ball, for which Aldridge was outfitted by Karl Lagerfeld. None of this would be possible without the help and support of Jane’s mother Judy, a former model with an affection for late-70s/early-80s maximalism, who often photographs her daughter for Sea of Shoes and whose own lifestyle blog, Atlantis Home, addresses topics ranging from kitchen renovations to Vivienne Westwood. Together, the women have injected the blogosphere—and the planned communities on the outskirts of Dallas—with a shot of exuberant, determined glamor.
