The Masses—a loose, Los Angeles–based collective of young, talented (and, let it be said, largely photogenic) artists—make videos and short films and throw one hell of a party. And as partner and Executive Director, Sara Cline is chiefly in charge of managing the circus, a responsibility she accepted in 2006 when she teamed up with co-founders Heath Ledger and Matt Amato. With the directive of pursuing projects with likeminded people, executed on their own terms, the founders recruited musician and filmmaker friends and began a series of charmed collaborations, including music videos for, among others, Devendra Banhart, Broken Bells and Bon Iver; art exhibitions in LA and Marfa; an annual film series; and a short movie, Air, featuring Andrew Garfield. Cline was well equipped for bringing these varied projects to fruition, having earned her bona fides working in production and development on Hollywood films including Legally Blonde and Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center, as well as the Broadway musical Wicked. Cline has also served as Executive Producer for the Art of Elysium’s Heaven Gala in 2009 and is a contributor to The Hedonist’s Guide, a luxury travel compendium.
