Tamra Davis—director for film and television, cook show host, mother of two, wife of the Beastie Boys’s Mike D—is a tremendously busy woman. Whether she’s making crepes with Christy Turlington for an episode of her web-based Tamra Davis Cooking Show, or directing music videos for acts as diverse as NWA, Sonic Youth and Hanson, Davis brings a steady, calming hand to all her projects. She earned cult cred as director of riotous features including Billy Madison and Half-Baked, and her 1989 video for Tone Loc’s “Wild Thing” was one of the most played of the decade. After making Crossroads, starring Britney Spears, Davis went into temporary retirement to start a family; during this interlude she developed an appreciation for television, and has since directed episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, Ugly Betty and My Name is Earl. The acclaimed The Radiant Child, a documentary on friend Jean-Michel Basquiat, complete with interviews Davis conducted with the artist in his youth, was released in July 2010, while her next directing gig Single Girls, an eight-episode series and movie, is set to air in July 2011.
