Ari Cohen
The accrued wisdom and personal flair of our elders was the inspiration behind Ari Seth Cohen's Advanced Style, his critically acclaimed blog dedicated to “the sartorial savvy of the senior set.” Cohen traces his reverence for the demographic back to childhood. “I grew up in San Diego and was best friends with my grandmother, who was a librarian,” he says. “My idea of aesthetics was based on going through her old scrapbooks, yearbooks and journals.” After studying art history at the University of Washington, Cohen moved to New York in 2008 and took note of the city’s population of well-dressed, vital older people. “Mimi Weddell, a 94-year-old actress and model, was a huge influence on me,” says Cohen. “People like Anna Piaggi and Quentin Crisp inspire me—they are fearless and wonderful.” Cohen’s photos and writing have appeared everywhere from The New York Times to Vice, and in projects for clients such as Timex and Talbots. In 2010, Selfridges London held the first exhibition of his style portraits for a concept store based on the blog. Next up for Cohen: a book, and a documentary about fashion and aging.
