Christian Borstlap

On the top floor of a 17th-century horse carriage repair station in Amsterdam, Christian Borstlap is up to interesting things. A former art director at KesselsKramer and frequent Tyler Brûlé collaborator, this year Borstlap unveiled his new creative agency, Part of a Bigger Plan. With a focus on branding, design and advertising (“and boeuf bourguignon,” he deadpans), PBP takes advantage of Borstlap’s background in graphic design, illustration and filmmaking, as well as his many years of work for clients such as Adidas, Virgin Atlantic and Selfridges London. The company has already turned out images for Dutch Premier League soccer, membership cards for the Amsterdam Zoo, and ad campaigns for Triodos Bank. In 2009/10, Borstlap designed children’s stamps for a Dutch charity, which raised more than €9.5m globally. For inspiration, Borstlap cites Bruno Munari, Emilio Pucci and Maurice Sendak alongside fellow countrymen such as Wim Crouwel and Dik Bruna. Toon, his five-year-old son, is also an influence—Borstlap once integrated his drawing into a stamp design—as is his girlfriend, the photographer Bianca Pilet, whom he calls “my creative conscience.”
