London’s Leading Young Designers Transform Their Wares into Tropical Havens
From Peter Pilotto's jungle-like Perspex sculpture to a flowering wall by Roksanda Ilincic, the vibrant “secret garden” installations inspired by the summer collections of six celebrated young designers are captured by photographer Freddie Helwig. The temporary constructions on the fifth floor terrace of London department store Harvey Nichols also include Marios Schwab’s confessional box cum garden shed and James Long's bamboo palace inspired by Las Pozas, the surrealist garden of English eccentric Edward James. Maarten Van Der Horst for Lulu & Co turned the brand’s birds of paradise motif into vinyl tabletops, while digital print virtuoso Mary Katrantzou created stained glass windows featuring a light projection of her “Balalaika” pattern, which depicts cherry blossoms in Kodachrome color. “We engineered the print to each window panel and the scale is enlarged so you are overshadowed by the blossoms,” explains the Athens-born designer. “We liked the idea of creating an interplay with the print and light, welcoming summer.” To add to the sunshine experience, each designer worked with Harvey Nichols’ Fifth Floor Restaurant bar to concoct a signature cocktail, like the Pilotto Punch (gin, mint, lime jam, berries and prosecco) and the James Long Island Iced Tea. “It’s fun visualizing your ideas in another way,” says Long. “I would love to create an environment for each collection—it tells another part of the story.”
