Hotel Arctic

The World’s Most Northerly Luxury Hotel

Photographer and filmmaker Glen Milner profiles Greenland’s Hotel Arctic set on the awe-inspiring, UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ilulissat Icefjord. The hotel provided the perfect solace against the demanding environment while Milner and Ben Hilton were filming Return of the Sun, their profile of an Inuit fisherman premiered on NOWNESS today. “Being greeted by howling huskies gives you a real sense of place,” says Milner of the hotel. “But it's not until you hit the glass walkway overlooking the bay that you get the full impact of your surroundings.” Incorporating a number of design-led suites featuring panoramic views from two sides and bespoke artwork commissioned from Greenlandic photographer Miki Jakobsen, the Arctic also offers a number of contemporary aluminium igloos placed on the fjord water's edge. “The individual igloos face right out to sea and are a perfect spot to take in the aurora borealis,” explains Milner. The resort has been awarded a Green Key by the eponymous environmental foundation for its innovatively low consumption of water, heat and electricity, and in keeping with its ecologically aware profile, the hotel's Restaurant Ulo relies almost solely on local produce. “The unique fish dishes and amazing burgers were a real highlight,” says Hilton. “The local fresh halibut simply roasted with vegetables was just fantastic.”
