Planningtorock: Living It Out

The Eccentric Musician's New Video Creates a Surreal Wonderland Amongst Berlin's Monuments

Musical polymath Janine Rostron, AKA Planningtorock, debuts the self-made video for her latest release “Living It Out," a warped and twisted slice of disco-electronica beamed from an otherworldly take on Studio 54. Comprising prosthetics, a Sideshow Bob-esque frizzy Afro and a large white helmet, Rostron’s performance is a reflection of her inquisitive personality. “Quite often I see pictures of myself and I don't really feel it actually fits how I feel inside,” explains the sonic auteur of her outfits. “The nice thing about being creative, you get to stretch and play around with who you are and how you look.” Although born in Bolton, England, leading to her being dubbed “the Grace Jones of the North” by the music press, Rostron has been living and working out of her self-built Berlin-based studio for ten years. In addition to Planningtorock, the musician has collaborated with close friends and fellow avant-garde musician Mt. Sims and the “beautifully evil” Swedish duo The Knife on an opera titled Tomorrow, in a Year, inspired by Charles Darwin.

STATS FROM ONSET

Ingredients
Presence, and I do like an element of rawness.

Inspiration
I wanted to make a dance video using choreography that was about wild moves to translate the energy in the song.

Location
A strange old monument in Berlin called Königskolonnaden, built in 1777. I really like it because people hang out there 24/7, getting drunk, playing sport––its a real meeting point and I love the architecture.

Costume
Predominantly a flasher’s coat. I found it in a second-hand shop in Berlin, and I really loved it because the color matched the stone of the monument.

Fuel
Champagne. And genuine excitement

Wig quota
One, my own. It's my hair that a friend worked up into the huge afro. We tied it in knots the night before and then brushed it up in the morning.

Mascot
She belongs to one of the dancers. She's called Pepsi. We had dog biscuits in the pocket to keep him calm.

Brand prosthetics
Literally something called Nose Putty. A friend who goes by the name GFS does it with me.
