The St. John Founder Shares a Bracing Cocktail to Revive and Restore

According to St. John’s chef and owner Fergus Henderson, a remedy taught to him by his father is the best way to cure what ails you. Dubbed the Dr. Henderson, the concoction is, in the gourmand’s words, “more than a cocktail––it has miraculous powers that can bring you back from the edge.” Whether the patient in question is suffering the after-effects of the night before or an overzealous meal, the herbaceous drink is best suited to tea time: “when you have had a good lunch and a good supper is looming,” he says. What's more, Henderson offers the recipe with a guarantee: "This drink works. The Fernet Branca has magic powers and puts any troubled organ to sleep, while the crème de menthe makes you feel like you’ve brushed your teeth."

Dr. Henderson

Serves 1

  • 2 fl oz Fernet Branca
  • 1 fl oz crème de menthe
  • Crushed ice
  • “A wee straw” (optional)

  1. Mix together the Fernet Branca and crème de menthe. It should look something like swamp water.
  2. Pour over crushed ice.
