uperstar designer Marc Newson takes on projects as if they were collegiate fields of study. After intensive research and tinkering—a process which may take years—he produces his theses, and design fans swoon. Though at the start of his career his focus was furniture (one of his earliest pieces was 1986’s Lockhead Lounge chaise, which makes a cameo in the video for Madonna’s 1993 single “Rain”
), he has since expanded into almost every conceivable area of design, creating clothes, homeware, interiors, and unique pieces such as a sculpture-cum-shelter that was installed on London’s South Bank for the Design Festival in 2009. Here we showcase some of his choice offerings from 2010.Jaeger LeCoultre Atmos Clock 566
For the haute horological company Newson designed a limited edition of 28 timekeepers, each of which comes in a Baccarat crystal casing. This is his second collaboration with Jaeger LeCoultre—he was so entranced by creating their 80th anniversary edition Atmos 561 (2008), he requested another go round.G-star by Marc Newson, Fall 2010
Streetwear gets a space-age makeover in Newson’s hands. His latest sleek capsule collection for the Italian denim brand (he has been producing one every season since fall 2009) includes a lightweight jacket emblazoned with a supernova, and could very well be de rigueur on interstellar catwalks next season.Nike Zvezdochka, Aquariva Colorway
No astronaut’s suit would be complete without the ultimate in space-walking kicks. These Newson-designed mesh and rubber booties, first debuted in 2004, are named after the Russian space dog whose flight immediately preceded Yuri Gagarin’s. They’re specifically tailored to the demands placed on a cosmonaut’s feet during deep space maneuvers and, as of 2010, come in the same teal as Newson’s Aquariva boat (featured in today’s exclusive film
on NOWNESS).Dom Perignon Black Box
For his fourth collaboration with the most famous champagne maker in the world Newson built a temperature-sealing travel case especially for the Dom Perignon 2000 Vintage. The matte polycarbonate mold of the casing snugs up against that famous silhouette, protecting the bottle from the rigors of a globe-trotting lifestyle, delivering it safe and perfectly chilled to any occasion.
