Beach Beauty With James Kaliardos

The Celebrated Makeup Artist Shares His Summer Tips

Makeup artist to the stars, and, with Stephen Gan and Cecilia Dean, co-founder of Visionaire magazine, James Kaliardos has worked on many famous faces, from Beyoncé to Madonna, as well as on high-profile ad-campaigns including Chanel and Balenciaga. Here he breaks down how he achieved Carolyn Murphy’s sunny, barely there look in Ryan McGinley’s film Entrance Romance (it felt like a kiss).

Fresh, healthy skin. For an even, dewy complexion, smooth on moisturizer, then spot-apply foundation around the center of your face—your nose, chin and under your eyes—and blend it outwards. Cover under-eye circles with concealer and set with a tiny bit of powder. Accentuate your cheekbones by contouring them with powder that’s a couple of steps darker than your complexion. Now for the only healthy tan: sweep bronzer over your forehead, nose and cheeks. Add a touch of apricot blush high on your cheekbones to create a beachy flush.

A touch of shimmer. For an ethereal glow, blend pearl liquid shimmer along the top of your cheekbones and dot it on the inner corners of your eyes.

Glossy lids. Apply nude or taupe eye shadow (or simply powder your lids) and dab a thin layer of petroleum jelly in the center to catch the light. To define your eyes without looking like you’re wearing liner, trace along the inside of your top lashes with brown pencil and apply mascara only to the base.

Nearly nude lips. Lightly trace and fill in your lips with nude beige or light brown pencil. Blend with your fingertips to soften any edges.
