New York's Inaugural Gallery Week

The Armory, Scope, Pulse and Performa—does New York really need another art-centered event? Casey Kaplan would tell you yes. Enter New York Gallery Week, launching this May and hoping to become a regular calendar fixture for art fiends. Focusing on solo exhibitions, NYGW has coaxed 50 Manhattan-based contemporary galleries to participate, from Uptown’s Eleven Rivington to downtown’s Deitch Projects. Each gallery will extend its opening hours, offering free admission as well as exclusive interactive events, with book signings, artist-led tours, panel discussions and film screenings scattered across the city. Founder Casey Kaplan (of the eponymous gallery) was adamant about bringing some zest back to the New York art scene after last year’s financial woes and marshaled a few important friends—Andrew Richards of Marian Goodman, Jason Murison of Fredrich Petzel and David Zwirner, to a name a few—to help her do so. Visitors to NYGW will be treated to exhibitions from greats including Roni Horn, Wilhelm Sasnal and Martin Creed, a selection of which are showcased here. But don’t let the name of the event fool you: NYGW is taking place over a long weekend spanning from Friday May 7th through Monday May 10th.
