Celebs Scribble For the Planet

Salman Rushdie, Colin Firth, Mick Jagger. Such names are usually only seen together at star-studded bashes and awards ceremonies, but they are among the A-listers wielding the same mighty pen to produce doodles, scrawls and handwritten ramblings for a good cause. To launch its fully biodegradable 98 Pen, New York-based design firm DBA turned to Brooke Geahan, whose impressive address book reflects her decade’s work for New York’s Accompanied Literary Society (for which she collaborated with figures such as Jay McInerney and Tom Wolfe) and Art Basel Miami (where she organized artist Andrew Cramer's “Art War” paintball party in 2008). Geahan recruited scribblers from the “entire fabric” of New York creative life for the DBA project. On DBA's eco-friendly Endless Notebooks, Rushdie muses on Ernest Hemingway, artist Dan Colen scrawls confrontational slogans in his typical bad-boy style, and hotelier Andre Balazs turns cartoonist. The fashion world makes plenty of marks too, with contributions from luminaries including Vogue Creative Director Grace Coddington, Ruben and Isabel Toledo, and Marchesa designers Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman. An online auction of the personalized notebooks begins today to raise money for clean water charity Riverkeeper.
