On the Fourth Day of Christmas
The Four Chicks in LA Quartet Warpaint Deliver a Dose of Bright Rock
To shake up a soundtrack of holiday standards, consider some indie-leaning intervention from the four calling birds that comprise Los Angeles dream-pop band Warpaint: alternating vocalists Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman, bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg and drummer Stella Mozgawa, with collaborative support from former drummers Shannyn Sossamon and Josh Klinghoffer. An instant blogosphere favorite following the October 2009 release of their acclaimed debut EP (mixed and mastered by former Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante), Warpaint has drawn comparisons to The Slits and Talking Heads for their modern experimental rock, which veers into gypsy folk and post-punk. The group’s newly released LP The Fool is layered with echoing vocals, bittersweet lo-fi harmonies and heavy rock passages. NOWNESS caught up with them at the Lake Hollywood Reservoir on the heels of their fall tour opening for the XX.
