The Green: Kicking Off

Despite its reputation as “The Beautiful Game,” football has rarely been presented stylishly in print. This is set to change with the launch of The Green Soccer Journal next week, an elegant magazine about the world’s most popular sport. “We came up with this concept because we felt there was a gap in the market,” says British Editor in Chief Adam Towle. “As football fans who see the game in a slightly different, abstract way, we felt under-represented. Most other cultures have a sophisticated voice in the publishing world.” The first issue of The Green features an interview with Bryan Ferry––not a man you’d immediately associate with soccer, but typical of the magazine’s desire to deviate from expectations. Stefan Ruiz’s exclusive pictures for NOWNESS highlight The Green’s ability to bring beauty to typical football scenes, capturing the Manchester City and Argentina player Carlos Tevez posing with battle scarred shins, and the Premier League side’s empty dressing room pre-match. “If you take away the scandals and obsession over players’ wages and club finances, what you are left with is a fast-paced, historic pastime that is admired all around the world," Towle says. "There are so many great football stories out there. One thing for certain: we'll never run out of content.”
