Where Three Dreams Cross

Photography from South Asia

Though most histories of photography usually begin in the west, with gentleman scientists such as Sir Henry Fox Talbot tinkering away in their homemade darkrooms, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh also had their fair share of photographers in the 19th and early 20th centuries, despite the difficulties of processing film in tropical climates. Taking these early efforts as a starting point, this month the Whitechapel Gallery in London will host an exhaustive exhibition of these three countries’ photographic achievements, featuring over 70 artists from the 1860s to the present day. Work by Cindy Sherman-esque Pushpamala N will feature alongside pieces by conceptually driven Rashid Rana and color-photography pioneer Raghubir Singh in this vibrant commemoration.
