Apocalyptic Pop

Brain Alfred’s seemingly simple, color-blocked aesthetic falls somewhere between those of Julian Opie and Ed Ruscha, mixing cut-out style portraits with pristine depictions of mundane urban landscapes. Exploring the way in which we perceive the world through ubiquitous media images, his work demonstrates a fascination with gargantuan background processes that we have come to take for granted - the activities of power plants, transport, military groups and pockets of civil unrest. Though his main output is comprised of stylized paintings and cardboard collages, his aesthetic springs into motion in his animated films. The latest of these, It’s Already the End of the World - a short excerpt of which we showcase today - is now being exhibited at Haunch of Venison, New York. The stuttering soundtrack is supplied by upcoming electronic artist Flying Lotus.
