Got Static
Steve McQueen at Marian Goodman, New York
Since he won the Turner Prize in 1999—beating media-favorite Tracey Emin to the prestigious award—Steve McQueen has time and again defied expectations. Establishing himself in the 90s with his deadpan video art, he is now recognized as an accomplished feature director (his debut movie Hunger premiered to rave reviews at Cannes in 2008) and an icon—he appeared as an unconventional model on the runway of Yohji Yamamoto’s spring 2009 show. This month McQueen is showing Static, a new, specially commissioned video work, at Marian Goodman Gallery, New York, alongside Giardini (2009), his quietly ambiguous portrait of Venice’s exhibition grounds, out of season.
