The Two Wheeled Wonder

Emma Reeves: Artists on their Bicycles

There are many artworks that have made great use of the humble bicycle, from Marcel Duchamp’s classic found object Bicycle Wheel to Simon Starling’s ingenious transformation of an Eames chair into a Marin “Sausalito” bicycle in Work, Made-Ready (2007). It’s almost enough to make you forget that an artist might actually ride a bike too, but—thanks to New York gallery The Swiss Institute—we now have a monthly reminder for the new year of 2010, in the form of Artists on Their Bikes: New York. For this limited edition calendar, Swiss photographer Lukas Wassmann photographed 12 artists including Ryan McGinley, Terry Richardson, David Byrne and Cindy Sherman whizzing around Manhattan on their bicycles, whether they’re getting from A to B or enjoying the ride as urban flâneurs. The calendar is available now from the Swiss Institute.
