On This Day In 1905

Greta Garbo is Born

With her arching eyebrows, sharp features and air of glamorous inscrutability, Greta Garbo was one of the biggest Hollywood stars of the 20th century. Starting her career in silent films such as Flesh and the Devil (1927), she was one of the few actresses to cross over into “talkies” in the late 20s, making her speaking debut in the immensely quotable Anna Christie (marketed with the catchline “Garbo Talks!”). A private individual, she stopped acting in the 40s, and was often associated with the words of her character in Grand Hotel: “I want to be alone!” She was born on this day in 1905.
