Facing the World
JR – Women are Heroes
For the past three years, anonymous grafitti artist JR has been working on his “Women are Heroes” project, traveling across Africa, Brazil, India and Cambodia and photographing local women. He pasted his portraits super-sized on walls, trains and billboards—anywhere, in fact, where he could get away with these unauthorized displays. The impetus behind the project is to bring about awareness of the women who so often suffer the most in areas of conflict, but nevertheless form the backbone of their communities. Though a photographic exhibition of his work recently opened in Paris, the centerpiece of the project is an upcoming film—a segment of which we showcase today.
